Q: Will the concrete chip or crack? 

A: Yes, when concrete is new it will crack. Note that concrete is usually very brittle when dry and thus it will not flex or bend. Concrete mixture contains water, which is an important part of the chemical reactions of the mixture. As the new concrete cures, water evaporates, reducing the volume of the concrete, causing it to crack.

Q: How do I prevent chipping or cracking? 

A: Unfortunately, it is very impossible to have a chip or crack proof concrete work. Even highly-engineered building foundations and bridge decks tend to chip, spall, weather, or crack as time passes. This doesn’t mean that the work is substandard; rather it means that the concrete has essentially been relieved of the immense pressure of the material.
